Social book marking sites as a marketing tool

July 12th, 2011 posted by admin

Word of mouth has been the oldest and most consistent tool in the world of marketing. Nothing can replace this form of marketing even with the best and most hi-tech tools that are available in the market today. The hi-tech and state of the art tools that are used today are ways in which the information is pushed to the people and then the information takes wings by discussion of the idea or service or product from one individual to the other. It may not be the physical mouth that is used in today’s world in the phrase of “word of mouth”. Stuff like social book marking has now replaced the mouth in its own way. People still believe in the text written by one about a service or product or whatever the business is dealing with, in their social bookmark, as authentic and the truth on which judgment about the product or service is passed. Marketing therefore has to rely on this form of word of mouth for propagating a business and its presence amongst the clients and customers. It is a way of communication that is even being used by known companies such as Iron Mountain business process management.

With just one click of the mouse one can mark a particular bit of information on a business or product on the web and the same is then available as a link on the individual’s social network profile or page and called a bookmark. There are not one but many social bookmarking sites and some of them are Digg or Technorati etc.

Each of these social bookmarking sites have their own individual features and uniqueness which needs to be read about prior to deciding which would be best suited as one’s marketing tool. Whatever be the case the fact remains that such sites are today shaping the way consumers share information between each other and the way opinion about a business or product takes shape.
